Enlarging the tent, together
The story of how a Tamil church in San Diego is prayerfully becoming a spiritual home for every Indian and South Asian family in Christ.
A church born from a genuine need
When we started the Tamil church in 2014, there was a great need for a Tamil congregation in San Diego. Many Tamil families had emigrated from India and from Jaffna, the Tamil-speaking region of Sri Lanka, and they longed for a place to worship in their heart language.
Over the years, something beautiful began to stir. Non-Tamil friends wanted to be part of our church, yet felt disappointed when they learned it was only for Tamils. To welcome them, some of our services naturally became bilingual, with preaching in both Tamil and English.
As the children among us grew, many could no longer follow the Tamil preaching, and slowly they stopped coming. So we waited on God. We prayed for wisdom to make room for everyone who could not understand Tamil. In that waiting, the Lord began to enlarge our vision.

“Enlarge the place of your tent, do not hold back.”
Isaiah 54:2
How God widened our vision
This is not moving away from our Tamil family. It is embracing more people with the love of Christ.
A Tamil church is planted
San Diego Tamil Church begins, welcoming Tamil families from India and Sri Lanka to worship together in their heart language.
Bilingual doors open
Non-Tamil friends long to belong. Services grow bilingual in Tamil and English to make room for everyone present.
Waiting on God for the next generation
As our children grow, they struggle to follow Tamil preaching. We wait on the Lord to help us reach everyone He is calling.
Becoming an All-India church
The Spirit of God enlarges our tent. We welcome every Indian and South Asian culture to worship as one family in Jesus Christ.
Why an All-India church
Scripture itself points us toward unity among diverse peoples under one Savior.
The Gospel is for every language
God's heart has always been for all nations. Revelation 7:9 shows a great multitude from every nation, tribe, people and language before the throne. Many cultures, yet one family in Jesus.
The early church crossed cultures
In the Book of Acts, Jews and Gentiles worshiped together and the Gospel crossed every barrier. At Pentecost, people heard the wonders of God in their own tongues.
Unity is greater than region
Paul writes that in Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, for we are all one in Him. Our identity in Jesus is greater than our regional identities.
San Diego is a mission field
Many immigrants feel lonely and search quietly for belonging. An All-India church becomes a spiritual home, a bridge for unity, and a witness of Christian love.
Honoring, not abandoning, Tamil roots
Tamil worship, songs, fellowship and care remain treasured parts of our church. We are not moving away from Tamil believers. We are enlarging the tent for others too.
Love bigger than comfort zones
Mission often means stepping beyond the familiar. Like the church at Antioch, we long to be multicultural, multilingual and mission-minded for the glory of God.
“That they all may be one, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.”
John 17:21

Founders & Pastors
Rev. Dr. Nathan J. Gnaniah & Ranjini Gnaniah
Pastor Nathan and his wife Ranjini started San Diego Tamil Church, the church family that is now becoming San Diego Indian Church. They came to the United States in 1987 to study at Fuller Theological Seminary, where Ranjini completed her M.A. and Pastor Gnaniah completed his Doctorate in Missiology.
They have given many years of their lives to the ministry of the Gospel. Together they also founded India Church Growth Mission, a church planting mission, and Danny and Friends, a compassion ministry serving communities in India.
Their heart for the nations continues to shape our vision, as we pray to become a spiritual home for every Indian and South Asian family in San Diego.

A witness our children will remember
As we become an All-India church, we are giving a powerful message to our young people. Children who grow up seeing believers from different Indian languages worshiping together learn something precious.
That Christ is greater than regional identity. That the Gospel unites what culture sometimes separates. And that the Body of Christ is a beautiful, God-given blessing.
By God's grace, we long to be biblically rooted, spiritually vibrant, culturally welcoming, and above all transformed by the love of Jesus, so that all who visit may say, “Surely God is among you.”
